Due to the importance that image and aesthetics have taken on in our society, aesthetic medicine is advancing by leaps and bounds. Restoration, maintenance and enhancement of beauty are increasingly in demand by both men and women.
Although there are many treatments to combat facial ageing, one of the most powerful is thread tightening, which we perform in our clinics in the Canary Islands. Its origin is Japanese. It is a completely safe treatment, which has been proven by years of use, as it was used for suturing in heart operations. At Clínica ICA you will be able to take full advantage of their power.
What is the treatment of tensor threads in the Canary Islands?
The tensor threads or polidoxanone threads are cutaneous and subcutaneous sutures whose origin lies in other medical disciplines, with an effectiveness and validity more than contrasted. These threads are used in cosmetic surgery to give the skin a youthful and rejuvenated appearance. This is achieved by removing wrinkles and tightening the skin to combat the flaccidity caused by the loss of collagen and elastin over the years.
The tensor threads we use at Clínica ICA are characterised by being particularly resistant and flexible. In addition, it should be noted that they are very easy to graft. On the other hand, they are totally safe and are completely reabsorbed. The threads are inserted in 20 to 30 minutes under local anaesthesia, so the treatment is painless. This treatment produces a natural and visible result from the first moment. In short, this is a very safe and effective treatment that has no side effects and does not cause discomfort when applied.
How is the procedure with tensor threads performed?
The technique of placing the tensor threads begins with an initial evaluation in which our specialists will analyse your case. Once we have analysed your face and the results you want to achieve, we will check that the threads we are going to apply are suitable for your body and that they will not cause any type of problem when they dissolve.
Once this first phase has been completed, the intervention itself begins by making sure that the skin is clean to avoid infections. Then we take some measurements of the area and paint the lines to get a visual idea of where they will pass and thus achieve the result we want. We then proceed to apply local anaesthesia, which makes the procedure completely painless.
Finally, we proceed with the tensor threads, which we apply to strategic points on the face and neck by means of small punctures. These are placed with special needles that adhere to the skin and tighten it until the flaccid parts are repositioned in their corresponding place, achieving a completely natural finish.
The introduction of the tensor threads in our clinic in the Canary Islands is done with special tubes. These are the ones that contain the tensor threads, so they are also introduced at the beginning and extracted at the end of the intervention.

Frequently asked questions about thread lift in the Canary Islands
How do thread lifts work?
The treatment with tensor threads at ICA works at a cutaneous level, causing the skin to tighten with a natural result. At the same time, they also work at a subcutaneous level.
To understand the latter we must take into account that the threads are made of polydioxanone, which promotes the natural creation of elastin and collagen in the area where we have inserted the threads. This is why the finish is like an easy facelift without having to resort to surgery. Among other things, this treatment is indicated to improve the smoothness of the skin and improve its appearance, while reducing flaccidity.
How many types of thread lifts are there?
There are currently three types of thread tightening:
- PDO threads (smooth threads): their use is suitable on occasions where the flaccidity is really slight. The biostimulation is what produces the tightening result, without producing mechanical traction.
- Spiculated threads: they are characterised by their resistance and are used in cases where flaccidity is moderate. It also promotes the production of collagen. They can be placed in quantities of 30 to 50 per session.
- Polylactic acid threads (silhouette soft threads): They are characterised by their mechanical traction that pulls the skin upwards. The result of the treatment lasts about 12 to 18 months. These are the ones we use in our thread lift treatment in Tenerife and La Palma.
How many tensor threads are needed on the face?
Actually, this is not a question that can be answered with a universal figure that is valid and applicable to all people equally. Because everyone has a different skin type, the figures can vary greatly.
If we refer to the area that is most commonly treated, the area of the lower middle third, we can talk about 30 tensor threads placed perpendicularly to create a mesh layer that supports the skin; and about three spiculated threads on each side of the lower face, i.e. six in total.
In general, 4 threads are usually placed per session, 2 on each side. However, in each case, the specialist must decide on the total number of threads to place per session.
When does the treatment with tensor threads start to take effect?
Since one of the benefits of this treatment is the production of collagen, the results of applying this technique are perceptible instantly. The rest of the results, such as the improvement of the quality of the skin and its condition or the lifting effect, are achieved over time, reaching their peak after two months.
In general, the definitive results are experienced between the first and second month.
The results of the tensor threads last from 12 to 18 months. Thread reabsorption occurs between months 6 and 8, depending on the characteristics of the patient's skin.
